How is Organic Sugar Made?

Organic sugar is sugar made from crops grown in a way that emphasizes natural interventions and avoids chemicals both in the field and during post-harvest processing. At Indiana Sugars, all our bulk organic sugar and organic liquid sugar are grown without the addition of synthetic herbicides or pesticides.

Organic sugar starts with organically grown sugarcane. The sugarcane is grown using non-genetically modified seeds and under conditions that adhere to the guidelines outlined above, meaning no chemicals or pesticides while crops are sown, tended, and ultimately harvested.

The sugarcane is taken to a mill where it’s thoroughly washed before being chopped and crushed. As the sugar cane is broken down, it releases cane juice. That liquid is filtered first to remove any debris leftover from the field, such as dirt or leaves, then the newly strained juice is boiled, spun, and dried until the liquid components evaporate and just one thing is left behind: organic sugar crystals.

Those crystals can then be further processed through steam cleaning. This step removes excess molasses, creating an end product that’s wonderfully pure and ready for a variety of delicious applications.

Though the process for turning sugar cane into bulk sugar sounds relatively simple, it requires a high level of precision. For instance, cane juice must be heated in stages and to very specific temperatures to properly concentrate the juice without introducing off flavors or compromising the integrity of the final product. Organic sugar requires creative methods for filtering juice and recovering runoff as well.

Once the sugar crystals are dried, sifted, and checked by the quality assurance team, they’re packaged for sale and transport.

Benefits of Organic Sugar

Some people believe that organic sugar tastes better than conventionally processed alternatives, likely because organic sugar contains fewer additives and hasn’t been subjected to chemical sprays or pesticides.

But there are other potential benefits to organic sugar as well, including the presence of polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that can help manage blood pressure and promote healthy circulation.

Different Types of Organic Sugar

Bulk organic sugar comes in several forms. In addition to the refined organic sugar crystals often used for baking or sweetening hot beverages, consumers can also opt for unrefined organic cane sugar, which is the least processed option available. This semi-refined ingredient is still safe for consumption but hasn’t been stripped of its molasses, leaving the sugar a pretty beige color rather than pearly white. Then there’s raw sugar, which is more processed than unrefined sugar but still contains some molasses.

Organic sugar also comes in liquid form. Organic liquid sugar is perfect for applications that require an ingredient that dissolves easily without the application of heat. It’s often used in the manufacturing of beverages like juice, energy drinks, and soda.

Certified Organic Standards

Products that are “certified organic” must be made in accordance with standards dictated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). These standards include rules regarding processing, handling, and packaging as well as how the original crop is tended.

Here are a few other crucial details regarding organic ingredients, and in particular bulk organic sugar, manufactured in the U.S.:

In alliance with the USDA, the National Organic Program (NOP) regulates the “organic” food label.

Organic sugar growers must be inspected and approved by the USDA to ensure a growing process with sustainable soil and water quality.

Sugar grown organically must exclude any genetically modified seeds in addition to synthetic herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers.

The processing, handling, and packaging of organic sugar must comply with NOP-regulated procedure.

Organic sugar displaying the USDA organic seal must pass NOP certification, performed by an agent.
